about

It is mid July and dawn breaks at a colony of white storks in Zywkowo, a small Polish village just near the Russian border. As darkness subsides, birds start to awaken and resume their daily activities. At first we can hear wing beats of a white stork as it passes close by. Faint voices of a house martin and a black redstart mark the beginning of a new day, while briefly stridulating upland green bush-crickets play last notes of their nocturnal symphony. In a nearby nest, a stork preens its feathers. From time to time a rooster crows nearby. Suddenly a single white stork starts to clatter, soon a few others join in and the entire colony quickly becomes filled with sounds made by several dozens of bills, often preceded by a characteristic hiss. The clattering frenzy spreads like a Mexican wave, enhanced by echoes created by nearby buildings and trees. As the noise quietens down, we can hear squeals of restless stork chicks asking for their morning meal. Some of them will be leaving their nests soon and now they are often seen hopping and flapping their wings against the wind as they train before their first flight.
